The Museum MAMAC, the city of Liege and the sadness of history

Once a city of great cultural development and blooming economic development, the city of Liege is now a bohemian image of the past. I personally like the chaotic relaxing feeling that the city gives, in contradiction with most of the rigorous planned cities of the more northern areas. As well as the pleasant character of the French speaking people that though seem cold at the beginning open up quite fast once you start a conversation. True, I have the advantage of speaking French but still...

The Museum MAMAC is one of the survivors of the Water Exhibition in Liege from the year 1905. A very important cultural movement at that time the exhibition had participants from all over the world. The building was designed from the beginning to survive the exhibition and to latter commemorate the event.
Today it struggles to survive, to maintain itself in the busy international world. It is to be admired that it doesn't give up and tries to reinvent itself in order to catch the eye of those, that in the world of compulsive shopping, are still trying to find the beauty of culture.

We caught the city of Liege in a sad day. It rained almost all the time, in a sad dark way, sometimes specific to the N-W part of Europe. The people I was with were in search of one of the most specific elements of the country: the Belgian waffle.
With waffles, coffee, nice companionship and more that nice hosts, the sadness of the rain went away instantly. Tips about when to visit the city and what to see were generously given by the locals and thus I will gladly return to Liege to test them.

The Kröller-Müller Museum

The Kröller-Müller Museum can be found at the centre of a large natural park, north of the city of Arnhem in the Netherlands. It has a divers collection of paitings and statues belonging to classic artists but it also promotes the new generation of artists. One cand find there, amongst others, a large number of paintings belonging to the Dutch painter Van Gogh as well as a small new permanent collection presenting the Romanian sculptor Brancusi.

The second area of the museum is represented by the large open air museum that surrounds the main building where one can admire a diversity of styles and approaches.

The exterior area of the parc surrounding the two areas of the museum, the Nationaal Park de HogeVeluwe, provides natural atractions and relaxing bike routes.
It is also the place where one can come across interesting architectural and historycal landmarks like the Jachthuis Sint Hubertus (Country Residence Hubertus).

I like traditions. I like to keep them. I love to discover traditions, of my people, of other nations. There is something fascinating about understanding why a tradition is kept, what it symbolizes, what it brings to the spirit, why it should be kept…

I grew up in a country in which traditions are important, at least they were a lot more important when I was a kid. I have lived the last couple of years in a country that is selectively keeping traditions and I am about to move in a country that holds on to its traditions and it is proud of it, but I still can’t answer this questions…

The picture you are seeing is from an orthodox baptize, a major Christian tradition that marks the introduction of a child in the orthodox faith.

Snow Art

It was funny how the snow came and left with me. Well not enirely bacause that would make me the Queen of the snow which is not the best sory character. But still, I was in one of the last planes to have delays of maximum an hour on both trips. It made for fabulous pictures both on the ground as in the air. And despite the fact that I don't like flying (I'm not afraid of it, I just don't like it) I have to admit the view was spectacular and I was quite sorry the moment we started the descent because I am convinced that the sunsed would have made for great pictures.

The living statues festival is an international event that occures every year in the city of Arnhem in the Netherlands. This year for the first time it streched on more than one day and it involved a new element called "Statues by Night".

"Statues by Night" was ment to make the spectators interact in a stronger way than before. The performers that made it happen worked in completly different styles. The show was more than a two dimensional performance so pictures don't do it credit. The experience, a very strong but intimate one, was a great succes for all the participants.

The Brothers of Limburg Festival – The Encampment

The festival starts slow with small demonstrations of the use of tool and weapons of those times. Most of them are done in such a way that the spectators, in particular the kids, get really involved. All over the parks small tables covered with white cloth or tents are used as showcases for foods, weapons, clothes and other typical merchandise. There are also special places where you can experience archery or sword fighting.

Above, the pictures picture several moments from one of the demonstrations. It was a fun little show that presented in detail the outfits, the weapons and their use. It finished with firing a trebuchet at the park tower. A very exiting target taking in consideration that it is a part of the history as one of the last relics of the city fortifications.

The Brothers of Limburg Festival

The Medieval Festival, as it is most commonly known, happens every last week-end of august and it brings back to life for two days old ways of life and traditions. It fills the streets of the city centre with colour, special outfits and old traditional merchandise. It is a good chance to live a little piece of history that one can otherwise only grasp in books. It is also a great opportunity for kids to have a fun day full of new things.

Split in two days, the festival starts slow on Saturday with small demonstrations that involve the kids in their procedures and continues on Sunday with the most important events: the tournament and the parade.

The name of the festival was given in the honour of the Limburg Brothers which are important names in the international medieval history. They were two painters that left their mark in the artistic field as well as in the historical field trough their drawn representation of events or characters. In those times their names as well as their talents were known in many royal courts.

4 Days of Nijmegen - The Dancing Police Officer

My favourite part of the last day is the dancing police officer, which I am presenting today. During the last day of the marches, more precisely on the last part, Via Gladiola, the traffic gets stopped everywhere but for one intersection (probably that would turn the city into chaos) where the police department handles cars, walkers, audience, TV crews and photographers. The spot light is taken by the police officer sitting right in the centre of the intersection who dances the entire time he directs traffic.

4 Days of Nijmegen - The Army Bridge

The Army Bridge is built every year for the route of the last day. It is a one day bridge. It is built on a water course in the city of Cuijk and it makes for quite an interesting view.

I have to admit that there is where I saw the biggest concentration of walkers, also that I was quite amazed by the speed of the walking rhythm.

The site of the bridge gets transformed into a very lively one with the help of the audience which is mostly just visiting the city that day. That makes for quite crowded trains for a large part of the day. Trust me! They were crowded!

4 Days of Nijmegen: the City

Despite being the oldest city of the country, Nijmegen is not part of the big and famous ones. Not exciting and loud as Amsterdam, Nijmegen attracts trough its historical and architectural personality. The city of students, that has been surprisingly quiet in the last couple of years, comes to life at least twice a year ( the 4 Days of Nijmegen and the Brothers of Limburg Medieval Festival).

The river front is the stage of the first evening of the four days of walking providing a spectacular fireworks spectacle. It is also a really relaxing place to have a walk, not to mention the morning coffee. Also it is my favourite area of the city which I present today in two pictures.

Despite being promoted as the city that combines the best the modern and the history in the area, I personally see the modern architecture of this city quite conservative. It is a bohemian city and that is its charm which still attracts plenty of people in the area.

4 Days of Nijmegen

As the four days of Nijmegen are rapidly approaching I have decided to write a few words about it. This is one of the most important international sport events in the area. It is open to all ages and all levels of training. It offers no material prizes just the personal satisfaction of overcoming one’s limits.

The final stretch, known as Via Gladiola because of the flowers offered to those who have succeeded in finishing all four marches, is pictured above. It is the day that attracts the highest participation of the locals as spectators. Their help is also offered during the four marches in providing an extra supply of water, food and assistance on top of the one offered by the organisers.

Finishing all the marches is seen as a great personal accomplishment. Doing that more than once is a matter of great pride and highly celebrated.
